Examinations

Your dog or cat has different health care requirements at each stage of his or her life.  We have developed a series of preventive wellness programs for puppies and kittens, adult pets, and senior pets.

Puppies and Kittens:  Puppies and kittens require a series of monthly health exams and lab work during their first six months of life.  Our comprehensive pediatric visits include a physical exam to ensure proper development, parasitic disease screening and treatment, and vaccinations.  We will begin year-round preventive medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworm parasites.  At six months of age, we recommend spaying or neutering your pet, as well as implanting a microchip for identification.

Adult Cat, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Adult Pets (Ages 1-6):  For adult dogs and cats, we recommend a yearly wellness visit consisting of a comprehensive physical exam, dental health evaluation, vaccinations, and screenings for heartworm disease and intestinal parasites.  Any additional tests that may be appropriate will be discussed.

Senior Care (Age 7 and Older):  Older pets can suffer from a variety of illnesses, such as kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.  The key to managing these conditions is early detection and treatment.  Because animals have a unique ability to hide disease and pain, we recommend that you bring your senior pet in for a physical exam at least twice a year.  We also perform blood and urine tests to detect diseases in their earliest stages, allowing your pet to enjoy the longest and healthiest life possible.

Vaccinations

Appropriate vaccinations are very important to keep your pet healthy.  Only necessary vaccinations and boosters should be given, and only as often as is needed.  It is important to consider infectious disease risks for your pet.  We will consider many factors in determining your pet's needs and vaccine schedule, e.g. indoor/outdoor, boarding, travel, breed, and age.  Together, we will formulate a plan which will incorporate various risk/benefit evaluations.  This will be adjusted as medical science progresses with new findings.

Anesthesia, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Anesthesia

We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high risk patients.  Using the most modern equipment, the patient's vital signs are monitored during all anesthetic procedures.

Surgery, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Surgery

Your pet's safety and comfort during surgery are our highest priorities.

Prior to surgery, we perform a complete physical examination and any age-appropriate pre-anesthetic blood screenings.  We continuously monitor your pet throughout the surgical procedure and recovery.

Your pet's surgery is performed under sterile conditions in our surgery suite.  The Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic utilizes modern surgical equipment and the latest in veterinary surgical technology to provide your pet with advanced, expert surgical care.

At the Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians perform numerous soft-tissue surgical procedures each day.  A few of these soft-tissue procedures include spays and neuters, Caesarian sections, tumor and mass removals, hernia repair, and gastrointestinal surgery.  We also perform many advanced orthopedic surgeries such as fracture repair, anterior cruciate ligament surgery, and patella luxation surgery.  Our goal is for your pet to receive exemplary surgical care before, during, and after the procedure.

Pain management is an integral part of our pre-operative and post-operative protocol.  Pain and discomfort can impede your pet's recovery.  Pain medication reduces pain and discomfort for your pet and helps him/her recover more quickly.  We use the safest and most effective pain medications available.

Diagnostic Laboratory, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Diagnostic Laboratory

Many laboratory tests are run at our clinic, especially when rapid results are needed.  These tests include: organ function tests, blood counts, heartworm testing, feline leukemia testing, feline immunodeficiency virus testing, fecal exams, urinalysis, bacterial and fungal cultures, skin scrapings, cytologies, and many more.  We also have the ability to send laboratory samples out to commercial labs for more extensive testing.

Dental, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Dentistry

Most dogs and cats eventually need a professional dental cleaning.  We use an ultrasonic scaler such as your own dentist may use.  We also hand scale teeth under the gum line where tartar often accumulates.  The teeth are then polished to help slow the recurrence of plaque and the inevitable progression of tartar or painful dental disease.  We use dental radiography to evaluate our patient's dental needs.  All dental procedures are done with similar anesthesia and monitoring, as with surgery, because dogs and cats will not sit still for effective scaling to be performed.  Some dogs need their teeth scaled every year or two, especially as they get older.   We will determine your pet's dental needs at his/her annual checkup.

Diagnostic Imaging, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Diagnostic Imaging

When necessary, we use non-invasive imaging studies to evaluate your pet.  With X-Rays or an Ultrasound we can diagnose conditions with minimal stress or pain.

Radiographs (X-Rays) help the veterinarian diagnose many potential health problems, including the location and severity of fractures, the identification of foreign bodies, heart disease, cancer, and broken or impacted teeth.

Ultrasound is an advanced imaging technique that uses sound waves to provide a real-time moving image of your pet's internal organs.  This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing abdominal and cardiac problems and can also be used to detect tumors, foreign bodies, and other illnesses.  We provide on-site ultrasound services performed by a veterinary specialist.

There are times when more advanced diagnostic imaging is needed for your pet.  We offer referrals to facilities that can offer magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan.

Electrocardiography (EKG/ECG), Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Electrocardiography (EKG/ECG)

Our doctors routinely utilize EKG/ECG testing to help diagnose and treat heart disease and cardiac irregularities.

Blood Pressure Evaluation, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Blood Pressure Evaluation

There are numerous diseases in pets that are associated with high blood pressure, including kidney and heart disease, hyperthyroidism, and many others.  We can evaluate your pet's blood pressure with our Doppler blood pressure monitor and determine if treatment is needed.

Glaucoma Screening, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Glaucoma Screening

Dogs, and sometimes cats, can develop glaucoma, a serious condition in which the pressure in the eye becomes elevated.  It is important to diagnose and begin treatment for this condition very quickly, because increased intra-ocular pressure can lead to pain and blindness.  We utilize a tonometer to determine the pressure in the eye.  This is a painless procedure that can be performed during a health examination.

Parasite Prevention and Control, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Parasite Prevention and Control

External parasites (fleas, ticks, etc.) and internal parasites (heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, etc.) are common in pets.  Many parasites, including fleas, ticks, and hookworms are zoonotic, which means they can affect you and your family, as well as your pet.

Prevention is the key to stopping parasites before they harm your pet and your family.  We recommend routine laboratory testing for heartworms, as well as fecal exams to screen for intestinal parasites.

Our hospital has a full complement of medications available for parasite prevention.  There are many different types of parasite prevention medications available, and we will work with you to determine which product is best suited for your pet.

Behavior Counseling, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Behavior Counseling

Some behaviors, as well as certain changes in behavior, can reflect underlying medical conditions.  These changes can often be evaluated with a physical examination and diagnostic testing.  If medical conditions have been ruled out, we offer behavior counseling to help you and your pet resolve these serious and difficult issues.

Microchip, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic

Microchip

A collar and ID tag may not be enough to ensure that your pet returns home safely if he or she becomes lost.  Microchipping is a safe, effective way to help your pet make it home safe and sound.  A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice.  It is implanted underneath your pet's skin between the shoulder blades during a process similar to a vaccination.  Each microchip is encoded with a unique set of numbers.  This information corresponds to your pet's data, which is placed in a national database.  Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of detecting and reading microchips.  If your lost pet is found, his or her microchip can be scanned, and the information is then used to reunite you and your best friend.
